The use of biomarkers for assessing effects of pollutant stress on fish species from a tropical river in Southeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Morado, Claudio Nona; Araújo, Francisco Gerson; Gomes, Iracema David.
Biomarkers are measurements within an organism that respond to environmental effects and are used as tools in bioassessment programs since they reflect physiological changes induced by exposure to pollutants. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and the condition factor (CF) in three fish species Geophagus brasiliensis, Hypostomus affinis and Hypostomus auroguttatus were used to assess effects of pollutant stress in a tropical river during two seasons (dry and wet). Fish from the least disturbed sites had the lowest condition factor (CF) and the lowest HSI, whereas those from sites near pollutant discharges had the highest CF and HSI. Higher HSI and lower CF occurred during the dry season. It is suggested that species adapted to stressful conditions take...

Towards a better assessment of the ecological status of coastal waters using satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentrations ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Saulquin, Bertrand; Oger-jeanneret, Helene; Lozac' H, L; Lampert, Luis; Lefebvre, Alain; Riou, Philippe; Bruchon, F.
The application of the new Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union will require a dense and frequent monitoring of chlorophyll-a near the coast. Not counting the transitional water bodies located in the vicinity of estuaries, not less than seventy four coastal water bodies have to be monitored along the coast of the French Atlantic continental shelf and the English Channel. All the available data have to be gathered to implement a comprehensive monitoring scheme. To this purpose, we evaluate the capacity of ocean colour imagery to complete the conventional in situ data set collected in coastal networks. Satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration is obtained by the application of a coastal Look-Up-Table to water-leaving radiance of the...

Traceability of animal protein byproducts in ruminants by multivariate analysis of isotope ratio mass spectrometry to prevent transmission of prion diseases J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Ferreira Jr.,Rui Seabra; Silva,Daniela Alessandra Fossato da; Biscola,Natália Perussi; Sartori,Maria Márcia Pereira; Denadai,Juliana Célia; Jorge,André Mendes; Santos,Lucilene Delazari dos; Barraviera,Benedito.
Abstract Background: Ruminant feed containing animal byproduct proteins (ABPs) is prohibited in many countries due to its risk of transmitting prion diseases (PD). In most cases the entire herd is sacrificed, which causes great harm to the producer countries by preventing their exportation of ruminant derived-products. Methods: We used stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N) to trace the animal protein in the blood of 15 buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) divided into three experimental groups: 1 - received only vegetable protein (VP) during 117 days; 2 - received animal and vegetable protein (AVP); and 3 - received animal and vegetable protein with animal protein subsequently removed (AVPR). Groups 2 and 3...

Trust in Authorities Monitoring the Distribution of Genetically Modified Foods: Dimensionality, Measurement Issues, and Determinants AgEcon
Bocker, Andreas; Nocella, Giuseppe.
Based on a combined internet and mail survey in Germany the independence of indicators of trust in public authorities from indicators of attitudes toward genetically modified food is tested. Despite evidence of a link between trust indicators on the one hand and evaluation of benefits and perceived likelihoods of risks, correlation with other factors is found to be moderate on average. But the trust indicators exhibit only a moderate relation with the respondents' preference for either sole public control or a cooperation of public and private bodies in the monitoring of GM food distribution. Instead, age and location in either the New or the Old Lander are found to be significantly related with such preferences.

Uncertainty as Information: Narrowing the Science-policy Gap Ecology and Society
Bradshaw, G. A.; National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) and USDA Forest S; bradshaw@nceas.ucsb.edu; Borchers, Jeffrey G; Department of Forest Science, Oregon State University; borcherj@ucs.orst.edu.
Conflict and indecision are hallmarks of environmental policy formulation. Some argue that the requisite information and certainty fall short of scientific standards for decision making; others argue that science is not the issue and that indecisiveness reflects a lack of political willpower. One of the most difficult aspects of translating science into policy is scientific uncertainty. Whereas scientists are familiar with uncertainty and complexity, the public and policy makers often seek certainty and deterministic solutions. We assert that environmental policy is most effective if scientific uncertainty is incorporated into a rigorous decision-theoretic framework as knowledge, not ignorance. The policies that best utilize scientific findings are defined...

Underwater video techniques for observing coastal marine biodiversity: A review of sixty years of publications (1952–2012) ArchiMer
Mallet, Delphine; Pelletier, Dominique.
Underwater video techniques are increasingly used in marine ecology studies. Technological progress regarding video cameras, sensors (such as sounders), battery life and information storage make these techniques now accessible to a majority of users. However, diver-based underwater visual censuses, and catch and effort data, remain the most commonly used for observing coastal biodiversity and species. In this paper, we review the underwater video techniques that have been developed since the 1950s to investigate and/or monitor coastal biodiversity. Techniques such as remote underwater video, whether baited or not, diver-operated video and towed video are described, along with corresponding applications in the field. We then analyse the complementary of...

Utilisation de la vidéo Haute Définition pour étudier la distribution spatiale de la biodiversité lagonaire de Pouebo, Nouvelle Calédonie ArchiMer
Witkowski, Fanny.
Coral reefs are among the most diversified ecosystems; structured by comlexe processese. Yet, spatial organization of the diversity of reef fish communities is not well known. The present study, covering the Marine Protected Area of Pouebo (North-East of New Caledonia), takes part of the AMBIO project from IFREMER, which studies spatio-temporal variations of biodiversity by means of High-definition rotatif underwater video systems. In total 1717 individuals from 25 taxonomic families, 56 genus and 145 species were observed. The derived habitat typology of stations distinguishes five habitat classes, which seem to be highly significant for fish species richness and fish density. Results show that biodiversity increases close to the intermediate and the...

Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Guyomarch, Julien; Tapie, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Budzinski, Helene; Andral, Bruno; Boissery, Pierre.

Water quality criteria and monitoring for marine mollusc culture : the French experience ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Berthome, Jean-paul.
The impact of the main parameters of water quality which act on the life history of molluscs are presented. Two types of parameters are examined: the first are the physical-chemical parameters as temperature, salinity, turbidity, oxygen concentrations. They can be modified by perturbations directly related to human activities such as management of physical operations, e.g. constructions of dams, dredging for channels or for extraction of materials. Particular attention is given to inputs of nutrients with as consequences eutrophication and depletion of oxygen causing anoxie conditions. Attention will he focussed on some phytoplankton species like Gyrodinium aurelum which can cause mortalities in mollusc shellfish. The action of the main pollutants...

Особенности сезонной динамики поля биолюминесценции и биомассы светящихся динофлагеллят у Севастополя (2008-2009 гг.) IBSS Repository
Серикова, И. М.; Брянцева, Ю. В.; Токарев, Ю. Н.; Жук, В. Ф.; Василенко, В. М.; Георгиева, Е. Ю.; Силаков, М. И..
Luminous dinoflagellates biomass seasonal dynamics as well as bioluminescence field vertical structure changeability during the year cycle (2008–2009) near the Sevastopol was studied. Two evident peaks during the cold (February) and warm (July–August) periods were revealed, which was connected with differences in development level and phytoplankton vertical distribution, which were stipulated in turn, by water hydrostructure peculiarities in the natural stratification layers. “Winter” bioluminescence maximum in the surface layer was stipulated by the development of C. fusus; P. divergens; P. oblongum mainly, with the cells volume, maximal in the year. The second one, located in the thermocline layer and lower, was formed, mainly, at the expense of C. fusus...
